7 Reasons Behind Snoring Problem

1. Nasal Polyps – Nasal polyps are one of the most common reasons why snoring occurs. These growths develop in the nasal passages, and as a result they can narrow your airway and cause you to snore while sleeping. These polyps affect adults mainly, but children may develop them if they have cystic fibrosis. Treatment includes medications or surgery to shrink or remove them.

2. Deviated Septum – A deviated septum occurs when the tissue that separates the different sides of your nasal passages is not straight, and is off to the side instead of right in the middle. This can cause the airflow through your nasal passages to become restricted or obstructed, and this will result in a snore problem during sleep. Treatment usually involves medications or surgical procedures to repair the deviation and stop the problem.

3. Sleep Apnea – Sleep apnea is a serious medical condition that can cause snoring. This condition causes you to stop breathing for short time periods while you sleep, and is frequently caused by a relaxation of the throat muscles that allow your airway to become blocked. This is what causes the loud snore symptom when you have this condition. In some cases sleep apnea can lead to death, and if you have sleeping concerns you should be evaluated by a physician.

4. Viral Infections – Viral infections can make you snore. From the common cold to the flu, and many other virus causing illnesses as well, these conditions can cause inflammation and irritation in your nasal passages and throat. In some cases your nose may be too stuffed up to breath, and mucous obstructs the airflow.

5. Enlarged Tonsils – Enlarged tonsils are a big cause of snoring. When you get a cold or other virus and you recover, or if you experience certain other illnesses or diseases, your tonsils can swell up and partially block your throat and airways. This prevents the full flow of air through your throat and nasal passages, and you will snore because of this.

6. Lying On Your Back While Sleeping – Sleeping while you are lying on your back can cause you to snore even if you do not do so in any other sleeping position. The tissues in your throat can fall back due to gravity, and this will partially block off the airways and cause you to start to snore.

7. Being Overweight – One common reason for snoring is excessive weight. If you are overweight or obese then you probably have extra tissue in and around your throat and nasal passages. When you sleep and your muscles relax this extra tissue can block off your air passages, making you snore. Losing some weight will help resolve this problem.
